Sad news brought the Filtrabit family to a standstill on Monday. Veikko Valli, the father of Filtrabit innovations and founder of the company, passed away on Saturday the 4th of June of a sudden illness that came unexpectedly, as Veikko was in very good health and had managed to avoid both hereditary and lifestyle related diseases. Running had changed to nordic walking but the pace of outdoor activity was still at 10 kilometres a day.

At the time of his death, he was 78 years old and still very involved in Filtrabit, the company he founded. His innovation, a technology developed for dust extraction and fine particle filtering based on flow dynamics, is already in the commercialization phase. After hearing the sad news, the people of Filtrabit spontaneously decided that Veikko’s legacy would be continued even more decisively.

Two siblings with the same name in the family. The older brother passed away at the age of one year – before Veikko was born. Both sons were born on 21st of November, so the parents gave their youngest the same first names. In all, Valli’s family had 8 children. Veikko too had a large family – 7 children and 30 grandchildren are left missing a loving father and grandfather.

During his lifetime, Veikko and his family built three houses on the side, while working their careers.

A career of 60 years – he started work at the age of 16 and retired in name only, because his passion for work kept him involved until the very end of his life. A few years after he had begun working, in 1970 he acquired the qualifications of a technician from the Pori Technical School in the field of study of technical construction. His long career included Rosenlew, Rautaruukki Engineering and between 2003 and 2010, Etteplan Oyj. The customer projects were very demanding and international in nature.

Veikko had an unyielding character – first a concrete goal was decided, then a solution was developed and taken all the way to completion under his leadership.

You can’t retire from your way of life

Innovating – solving problems and developing solutions was Veikko’s passion – a way of life that he was able to follow until his death. At the design agency Etteplan, he was quickly recalled from retirement. When a potential round of layoffs was looming at the company, he was the first to volunteer to retire in earnest, so that a younger colleague with a mortgage might continue working in his place. Veikko was not idle in retirement either and founded Filtrabit with the aim of solving the dust control challenges of industry.

Not afraid of new technology, he adopted the latest digital tools quickly and decisively. As a designer who has worked in the 2D world for a long time, he took to 3D design towards the end of his career.

Patents were his most cherished awards

Marko Valli, Son of Veikko and CEO of Filtrabit: ”I have come to understand that the patents of his innovations were, to some extent, important recognitions of his competence for him. A patent is always a concrete tribute to the designer, proving that something new and unique has been developed – something worthy of patent protection.

In addition to his work, Veikko worked on solving practical problems through creative design and innovation. His patented flow dynamics-based technology was created in an everyday situation. Do-it-yourself was not a trend at the time, but a part of life in Finland. If you had your own garage, you did at least the basic maintenance yourself. Veikko was changing the oil in his Volvo 244 when he began to wonder why dust had accumulated on the radiator in a lopsided manner. Discovering this, he had the idea that allowed industrial dust to be removed effectively without clogging-prone and difficult-to-replace fiber filters. Flow-dynamic principles were at the core of his innovation and the University of Oulu participated in the modelling work. The practical development took place at SSAB’s Raahe steelworks coking oven, where coke dust is recovered for reuse and exhaust air is filtered from fine particles. A company, Filtra Group Oy, was established for commercializing the invention.

Veikko’s legacy motivates and holds the Filtrabit-team to a high standard. The innovation is in good hands.

Veikko had time to see the formation of the strong core of the current Filtrabit organization.

”Let’s ask Veikko.” has now changed to ”How would Veikko solve this?”. Veikko used to give three different options for a solution and analytically present them with pros and cons. He then left decision-making and refining options to his independent team.

The patented technology is now in the commercialization phase. Together, it was decided that Veikko’s legacy would be exported to the international markets and be grown into a major Finnish green-tech success story.

Patentit olivat Filtrabit-innovaatioiden isälle Veikko Vallille korkein tunnustus

Veikko Valli 21.11.1943 Pori – 4.6.2022 Oulu

Molemmat Veikot olivat syntyneet 21.11. joten vanhemmat antoivat nuorimmaiselleen samat etunimet. Kaikkiaan Vallin perheessä oli 8 lasta. Suuren perheen sai Veikkokin – 7 lasta ja 30 lastenlasta jäivät kaipaamaan lämmintä isää ja isoisää.

Veikko perheineen rakensi kolme omakotitaloa – työuran sivutuotantoina.

Kaupallistamista varten perustettiin yritys, Filtra Group Oy,

Veikon perintö velvoittaa filtrabitilaisia. Innovaatio on hyvissä käsissä.

Veikko ehti nähdä nykyisen vahvan Filtrabit-organisaation ytimen muodostumisen.
