Filtrabit has been chosen by Tapojärvi as its co-development partner for a groundbreaking side stream initiative. Filtrabit will be in charge of handling the dust control system for a movable slag processing line.
The unique movable processing line solves an important problem for industrial clients: the on-site processing and refining of materials has previously required a massive scale before building an on-site facility becomes economically viable. On the other hand, transportation of the materials to a more remote off-site facility for processing is often equally unviable for both economical and environmental reasons.
With a movable solution, the barrier of entry for on-site processing is significantly lowered. The space and infrastructure required, flexibility of placement and possibility for a limited time of use at a given location, entirely alter the feasibility of refining industrial waste products.
A key consideration for any refining of materials into smaller fractions is the handling of dust and particulate emissions. To be truly movable, the processing line must include its own solution for dust control. Filtrabit’s flow-dynamic dust separation technology offers unique advantages for this application due to its compactness and modularity.
With sophisticated automation, Filtrabit’s system recognizes the current stage of the process and directs its air intake capacity exactly where it’s needed. The cleaned air is fed back into the process, forming a fully closed-loop solution with no external exhaust connection. This minimizes airborne particulate emissions and eliminates the creation of secondary waste streams.
Filtrabit’s solution integrates into a seamless part of the process, with the captured dust being directed into a later stage in the process, where it gets utilized immediately as a part of the refined end product.
Juha Koskinen, R&D Manager, Tapojärvi:
“Both companies, from the same region of Northern Finland, are working on the cutting edge of technological development in their respective fields, and combining forces on this solution made a lot of sense.
From early on, we identified Filtrabit’s technology as a possible solution to the very real challenge of handling the dust generated by the process locally, without compromising the modularity and movability of the whole operation. The level of integration into the process, with dust being utilized directly as part of the end product, was a welcome bonus.
Our ability to unlock all of these new side streams for our clients with this innovation is entirely dependent on that flexibility from movability. Being able to pick up the processing line and moving it to a different location on demand is what changes the economics of it all in such a profound way that everyone benefits. Even the industries downstream that get access to more cost-effective low-CO2 raw materials.”
Dr. Kim Fagerlund, CEO of Filtrabit:
“We are incredibly excited to be part of the circular economy in the crucial treatment of industrial side streams. The benefits derived from removing industrially accumulated dust emissions are profound. They are not only limited to improved air quality and reducing CO2 emissions, but they also deliver vital environmental benefits by saving natural resources through enabling valuable raw material circulation.”
